Weight vs Size

Why carat isn't the same as size.

Carat measures weight, not dimensions. The size you actually see is the stone's measurement in millimetres — and two diamonds of the same carat can look different sizes depending on how they are cut.

A shallow, well-spread stone shows more face-up area; a deep-cut one hides weight underneath. So when comparing diamonds, compare the millimetre dimensions, not just the carat weight.

"The number that decides how big a diamond looks isn't the carat — it's the measurement in millimetres."

The chart below gives you both, so you can picture the real size before you choose.

Good to Know

What makes the princess special.

Brilliant Fire, Square Outline

The princess pairs a sharp square shape with brilliant faceting — the most sparkle of any square cut.

More Stone Per Carat

Its squared shape retains more of the rough, so a princess often costs a little less per carat than a round.

Protect the Corners

Sharp corners are the vulnerable point — a setting that covers them prevents chipping.

Hides Inclusions Well

Brilliant faceting masks small inclusions, so eye-clean VS stones are easy to find.

Shown to Scale

What each size actually looks like.

These princess shapes are drawn to relative scale from real face-up dimensions. Notice how gently size grows — a 2 carat is larger than a 1 carat, but not twice the size.

Lab grown advantage: because a lab grown princess costs far less than a mined one of the same quality, most buyers can move up a size — the budget for a 1 carat mined stone often reaches a noticeably larger lab grown one.
Length-to-Width Ratio

Choosing the right proportions.

Two princesss of the same carat can look different depending on their length-to-width ratio. It comes down to taste — here are the main looks.

1.00 – 1.02
Perfect Square

The classic princess — equal sides, sharp and contemporary.

1.02 – 1.05
Near Square

Barely perceptible length — still reads as a clean square.

1.05 – 1.10
Slightly Rectangular

A subtle rectangle for those who want a hint of length.

The ratio is listed on the IGI certificate — so you can match the exact proportions you prefer. Our chart uses a classic, well-balanced ratio; a rounder or longer stone shifts the millimetres for the same carat.
Buying a Princess

Four things worth knowing first.

Beyond size, a few princess-specific pointers help you choose a stone that looks its best.

Cover the Corners

Pointed corners can chip, so choose a setting with protective prongs or a channel — the one real durability consideration.

Clarity Is Forgiving

Faceting hides inclusions, so an eye-clean VS1–VS2 looks flawless at good value.

Watch Colour at the Corners

A little warmth can gather in the corners; near-colourless grades keep it crisp in white metal.

Keep It Square

A ratio at or just above 1.00 gives the clean, classic princess look most buyers want.

Size on the Hand

How the setting changes the size you see.

The same stone can look bigger or smaller depending on how it is set. If maximising visual size matters, the setting is as important as the carat weight.

A solitaire shows the true size; a halo frames it to read larger; a three-stone setting stretches the look along the finger. Choosing well means you can often get the presence you want without moving up in carat.

See our ring setting & style guide for matching setting to shape, and the carat size guide for how carat works across all shapes.
Solitaire
Shows the diamond's true size — nothing added, nothing hidden.
Halo
A ring of small diamonds can make the centre read around a half-carat larger.
Three-Stone
Side stones extend the look along the finger for extra presence.
Pavé Band
A diamond-set band adds sparkle and draws the eye to the centre stone.
Slim Band
A thinner band makes the centre stone look proportionally larger.

Chat on WhatsApp
How big is a 1 carat princess diamond?
A well-cut 1 carat princess measures about 5.5 × 5.5 mm across. Face-up it can look a touch smaller than a round because it carries weight in its depth.
Is a princess always square?
Almost — the classic princess is 1.00–1.05, essentially square. Slightly rectangular versions exist but are less common.
Do princess corners chip easily?
The sharp corners are the vulnerable point, but a setting that protects them removes the risk. It is then well suited to everyday wear.
Does a princess sparkle like a round?
It has excellent brilliant-cut fire — the most sparkle of the square shapes — though a round still edges it for pure light return.
Why do two 1 carat princesses look different?
Depth and spread vary; a deeper stone looks smaller face-up. Compare the millimetre measurements, not just the carat.
Are these measurements exact?
They are close approximations for a well-cut princess. Up to 1 carat they reflect our own stones; larger sizes are extrapolated. Exact size is on the certificate.
