What Is a Setting?

The setting is how the diamond is held.

A "setting" is the way the metal cradles and secures the diamond — the entire architecture around the stone. It is distinct from the shape of the diamond and from the metal you choose, though all three work together to create the finished ring.

The same diamond can look modest in one setting and magnificent in another. A halo can make a stone look noticeably larger; a solitaire lets it stand alone in pure simplicity; a bezel wraps it for a sleek, modern, protected look. Choosing the setting is choosing the personality of the ring.

"Two people can choose the same diamond and walk away with completely different rings — because the setting is where personality lives."

Because every Variation ring is made to order, you are never limited to a fixed design. Choose the setting that speaks to you, and we craft it around your stone.

What the Setting Decides

Four things a setting controls.

Perceived Size

A halo or pavé band can frame a stone so it reads larger than its carat weight. A solitaire shows the stone at its true size, beautifully unadorned.

Sparkle

Accent diamonds on the band or halo add extra fire and light. Open settings let more light into the centre stone itself.

Security & Wear

A bezel protects the stone fully; six prongs hold more securely than four. Your lifestyle should guide how protective a setting you choose.

Character

Classic, vintage, modern, romantic, bold — the setting more than anything else gives the ring its voice and its era.

The Settings

Eight settings, eight personalities.

From the timeless solitaire to the romantic toi et moi, here is each setting explained — its character, what it does for your diamond, and who it suits best.

01
Solitaire
The Timeless Classic

A single diamond, held aloft on a clean band — nothing to distract from the stone itself. The solitaire is the most enduring setting of all: elegant, versatile, and never out of style. It lets the diamond speak entirely for itself.

Best ForPurists; classic taste; showing off a beautiful stone
NoteChoose six prongs for extra security on larger stones

02
Halo
Maximum Presence

A ring of small diamonds encircles the centre stone, framing it in extra sparkle and making it appear noticeably larger. The halo delivers the most visual impact for your budget — a glamorous, light-catching look that turns heads.

Best ForMaximising size and sparkle; glamorous taste
NoteMakes a smaller centre stone look significantly bigger

03
Three-Stone
Past, Present & Future

A central diamond flanked by two companions — classically said to represent a couple's past, present, and future. Beyond the symbolism, it adds width, sparkle, and a sense of occasion, and lets you increase total carat presence elegantly.

Best ForMeaningful symbolism; anniversaries; added presence
NoteSide stones can echo or contrast the centre shape

04
Pavé
Sparkle From Every Angle

Tiny diamonds are set closely along the band, "paving" it with light so the whole ring shimmers, not just the centre. Pavé adds brilliance and a luxurious feel while keeping the focus on the main stone — sparkle that follows the eye.

Best ForExtra brilliance; a luxurious, detailed look
NotePairs beautifully with almost any centre setting

05
Side-Stone
Framed & Flattering

Smaller diamonds run along the shoulders of the band, leading the eye toward the centre stone and adding gentle sparkle without a full halo. A refined middle ground — more interest than a solitaire, more restraint than a halo.

Best ForSubtle extra sparkle; a balanced, classic look
NoteTapered side stones elongate and slim the finger

06
Toi et Moi
You & Me

Two diamonds sit side by side — "you and me" in French — entwined on one band. Deeply romantic and increasingly sought-after, it can pair two shapes or two sizes to tell a personal story. A ring with meaning built into its form.

Best ForRomantic symbolism; distinctive, modern taste
NoteMix shapes — a round with a pear, for instance

07
Bezel
Modern & Protected

A thin rim of metal wraps fully around the diamond's edge, holding it securely with a clean, contemporary silhouette. The bezel is the most protective setting — ideal for active hands — and gives a sleek, minimal, distinctly modern look.

Best ForActive lifestyles; modern, minimal taste; durability
NoteThe most secure setting for everyday wear

08
Cathedral
Graceful & Architectural

Arches of metal sweep up from the band to cradle the diamond, lifting it gracefully like the soaring lines of a cathedral. It raises the stone for added presence and light, with an elegant, architectural profile from the side.

Best ForElegant height and presence; refined silhouettes
NoteOften combined with pavé or a solitaire head

Setting Meets Shape

Pairing settings with diamond shapes.

A setting and a diamond shape are two separate choices — and some combinations are especially flattering. A solitaire suits every shape; a halo loves a round or oval; a three-stone frames an emerald or radiant beautifully.

The table is a starting point, not a rule. Almost any shape works in almost any setting — these are simply the pairings our customers reach for most. To explore shapes in depth, see our diamond shape comparison guide.

Made to order means freedom: if you love a shape and a setting that aren't listed together, we can almost certainly still make it. Just ask.

How to Choose

Three questions that point you to your setting.

No setting is objectively best. Work through these and the right one usually reveals itself.

01
Classic, glamorous, or modern?
Drawn to timeless simplicity? A solitaire or side-stone. Want maximum sparkle and presence? A halo or pavé. Prefer clean, contemporary lines? A bezel. The feeling you want is the fastest route to the setting.
02
How hands-on is daily life?
For very active hands, a bezel or a sturdy six-prong solitaire protects the stone best. For occasion wear, raised settings like cathedral or delicate pavé shine without the same wear concerns. Lifestyle should shape the choice.
03
Where should the eye go?
Want the centre diamond to be the whole story? A solitaire or bezel keeps it pure. Want sparkle across the entire ring? Pavé, halo, and side-stone settings spread the light. Decide where you want the attention.

What's the difference between a setting and a diamond shape?
They are two separate choices. The shape is the outline of the diamond itself — round, oval, emerald, and so on. The setting is how the metal holds that diamond and what surrounds it — solitaire, halo, bezel, and so on. You choose both: first the shape of your stone, then the setting that frames it. The same shape can look very different in different settings.
Which setting makes a diamond look biggest?
A halo setting creates the greatest illusion of size, because the ring of small diamonds around the centre stone visually extends its outline — a modest centre stone can look a half-carat larger or more. Pavé bands and thinner shanks also enhance perceived size by making the centre stone the focal point. If maximum presence for your budget is the goal, a halo is the classic answer.
Which setting is most secure for everyday wear?
The bezel is the most protective, because a rim of metal wraps the entire edge of the diamond rather than holding it with prongs. It is an excellent choice for active hands or anyone who works with them. Among prong settings, six prongs hold more securely than four. If durability is your priority, a bezel or a six-prong solitaire is the way to go.
Are halo and pavé settings harder to maintain?
They have more small diamonds, so they reward occasional cleaning to keep every stone sparkling, and very rarely a tiny accent may need re-securing over many years — both routine and easily handled. They are not fragile, just a little more detailed. If you prefer the absolute lowest maintenance, a solitaire or bezel has the fewest stones to look after.
Can I combine settings, like a halo with pavé?
Absolutely — and many of the most beautiful rings do exactly that. A halo centre on a pavé band, a cathedral lift with a hidden halo, three stones with pavé shoulders: these combinations are common and stunning. Because every Variation ring is made to order, you can blend elements to create something that feels entirely your own. Tell us what you have in mind.
What is a toi et moi ring?
Toi et moi — French for "you and me" — is a setting with two diamonds sitting side by side on a single band, symbolising two people coming together. It is one of the most romantic and personal settings, and it lets you pair two shapes or sizes for a truly individual look. It has a long history in fine jewellery and has become especially sought-after for engagements.
Does the setting affect the price?
Yes, mainly through the number of accent diamonds and the amount of metalwork. A plain solitaire uses the least; halo, pavé, and three-stone settings add small diamonds and so add cost. The good news with lab grown diamonds is that the centre stone costs far less than a mined equivalent, which often leaves room to choose a more detailed setting. We're happy to help you balance the two.
