Weight vs Size

Why carat isn't the same as size.

Carat measures weight, not dimensions. The size you actually see is the stone's measurement in millimetres — and two diamonds of the same carat can look different sizes depending on how they are cut.

A shallow, well-spread stone shows more face-up area; a deep-cut one hides weight underneath. So when comparing diamonds, compare the millimetre dimensions, not just the carat weight.

"The number that decides how big a diamond looks isn't the carat — it's the measurement in millimetres."

The chart below gives you both, so you can picture the real size before you choose.

Good to Know

What makes the marquise special.

The Largest Look Per Carat

Its long, narrow outline gives the marquise the biggest face-up area of any shape for its weight.

Maximum Finger Lengthening

No shape lengthens and slims the finger more — the marquise is the most elongating cut of all.

Two Points to Protect

Both ends are pointed and vulnerable; V-prongs shield them from chipping.

Mind the Bow-Tie

Like other elongated brilliants, a marquise can show a bow-tie; good symmetry keeps it faint.

Shown to Scale

What each size actually looks like.

These marquise shapes are drawn to relative scale from real face-up dimensions. Notice how gently size grows — a 2 carat is larger than a 1 carat, but not twice the size.

Lab grown advantage: because a lab grown marquise costs far less than a mined one of the same quality, most buyers can move up a size — the budget for a 1 carat mined stone often reaches a noticeably larger lab grown one.
Length-to-Width Ratio

Choosing the right proportions.

Two marquises of the same carat can look different depending on their length-to-width ratio. It comes down to taste — here are the main looks.

1.80 – 1.90
Fuller

A slightly broader marquise — a touch less pointed, still striking.

1.90 – 2.10
Classic

The balanced, most classic marquise — neither too narrow nor too wide.

2.10 – 2.30
Slender

A longer, more slender boat for the most dramatic, elongating look.

The ratio is listed on the IGI certificate — so you can match the exact proportions you prefer. Our chart uses a classic, well-balanced ratio; a rounder or longer stone shifts the millimetres for the same carat.
Buying a Marquise

Four things worth knowing first.

Beyond size, a few marquise-specific pointers help you choose a stone that looks its best.

Protect Both Points

V-prongs at each tip guard the marquise's two vulnerable points and define its crisp outline.

Symmetry Is Critical

The two halves must mirror each other and the points must align — uneven symmetry is very visible on a marquise.

Watch Colour at the Points

Warmth concentrates at the tips; a slightly higher colour grade keeps them bright in white metal.

Clarity Is Forgiving

Brilliant faceting hides small inclusions, so an eye-clean VS stone offers great value.

Size on the Hand

How the setting changes the size you see.

The same stone can look bigger or smaller depending on how it is set. If maximising visual size matters, the setting is as important as the carat weight.

A solitaire shows the true size; a halo frames it to read larger; a three-stone setting stretches the look along the finger. Choosing well means you can often get the presence you want without moving up in carat.

See our ring setting & style guide for matching setting to shape, and the carat size guide for how carat works across all shapes.
Solitaire
Shows the diamond's true size — nothing added, nothing hidden.
Halo
A ring of small diamonds can make the centre read around a half-carat larger.
Three-Stone
Side stones extend the look along the finger for extra presence.
Pavé Band
A diamond-set band adds sparkle and draws the eye to the centre stone.
Slim Band
A thinner band makes the centre stone look proportionally larger.

How big is a 1 carat marquise diamond?
A well-cut 1 carat marquise measures roughly 10 × 5 mm at a classic ~2.0 ratio. It has the largest face-up footprint of any shape for its carat weight.
What ratio is best for a marquise?
The classic range is 1.90–2.10, with ~2.00 the most balanced 'boat' shape. Narrower looks more slender; fuller looks broader.
Does a marquise look bigger than other shapes?
Yes — for the same carat weight it presents more surface area than any other shape, and it lengthens the finger the most.
Are the points fragile?
The two tips are the vulnerable areas, but V-prongs protect them well, making the marquise perfectly wearable day to day.
Why do two 1 carat marquises look different?
Ratio, spread and depth all change the outline. A narrower stone looks longer; compare the millimetre dimensions and the ratio.
Are these measurements exact?
They are close approximations for a well-cut marquise. Up to about 0.5 carat they reflect our own stones; larger sizes are extrapolated to the same proportions.
