An oval's true size is its length × width in millimetres. This chart converts every popular carat weight to real dimensions, using our own diamond measurements.

Weight vs Size

Why carat isn't the same as size.

Carat measures weight, not dimensions. The size you actually see is the stone's measurement in millimetres — and two diamonds of the same carat can look different sizes depending on how they are cut.

A shallow, well-spread stone shows more face-up area; a deep-cut one hides weight underneath. So when comparing diamonds, compare the millimetre dimensions, not just the carat weight.

"The number that decides how big a diamond looks isn't the carat — it's the measurement in millimetres."

The chart below gives you both, so you can picture the real size before you choose.

Good to Know

What makes the oval special.

Looks Larger Per Carat

Its elongated outline spreads more surface across the finger, so an oval appears roughly 10–15% larger than a round of the same carat.

Elongates the Finger

The long axis visually lengthens and slims the finger — a key reason it is so popular for engagement rings.

Mind the Bow-Tie

Most ovals show a faint darker band across the centre. Excellent symmetry keeps it subtle.

Hides Inclusions Well

Brilliant faceting masks small inclusions, so an eye-clean VS1–VS2 oval is easy to find.

Shown to Scale

What each size actually looks like.

These oval shapes are drawn to relative scale from real face-up dimensions. Notice how gently size grows — a 2 carat is larger than a 1 carat, but not twice the size.

Lab grown advantage: because a lab grown oval costs far less than a mined one of the same quality, most buyers can move up a size — the budget for a 1 carat mined stone often reaches a noticeably larger lab grown one.
Length-to-Width Ratio

Choosing the right proportions.

Two ovals of the same carat can look different depending on their length-to-width ratio. It comes down to taste — here are the main looks.

1.30 – 1.35
Rounder

Fuller and softer, closer to a round, with a little less lengthening effect.

1.35 – 1.45
Classic

The balanced, most popular look — elegantly elongated without being narrow.

1.45 – 1.55
Elongated

Longer and more slender, for the strongest finger-lengthening effect.

The ratio is listed on the IGI certificate — so you can match the exact proportions you prefer. Our chart uses a classic, well-balanced ratio; a rounder or longer stone shifts the millimetres for the same carat.
Buying a Oval

Four things worth knowing first.

Beyond size, a few oval-specific pointers help you choose a stone that looks its best.

Prioritise Symmetry

Because ovals show a bow-tie, symmetry matters more than on a round. Excellent or Very Good symmetry keeps the outline even and the centre bright.

Watch the Colour

Ovals can hold a touch more warmth at the points. In white metal a slightly higher colour grade keeps it white; in yellow or rose gold a warmer grade blends in.

Clarity Is Forgiving

The faceting hides small inclusions, so an eye-clean VS1–VS2 looks flawless to the naked eye at far better value.

Match It to the Finger

On slimmer fingers a 1 carat oval already reads generously; on broader hands 1.5–2 ct holds its presence.

Size on the Hand

How the setting changes the size you see.

The same stone can look bigger or smaller depending on how it is set. If maximising visual size matters, the setting is as important as the carat weight.

A solitaire shows the true size; a halo frames it to read larger; a three-stone setting stretches the look along the finger. Choosing well means you can often get the presence you want without moving up in carat.

See our ring setting & style guide for matching setting to shape, and the carat size guide for how carat works across all shapes.
Solitaire
Shows the diamond's true size — nothing added, nothing hidden.
Halo
A ring of small diamonds can make the centre read around a half-carat larger.
Three-Stone
Side stones extend the look along the finger for extra presence.
Pavé Band
A diamond-set band adds sparkle and draws the eye to the centre stone.
Slim Band
A thinner band makes the centre stone look proportionally larger.

How big is a 1 carat oval diamond?
A well-cut 1 carat oval measures about 8.0 × 5.6 mm face-up at a classic ~1.43 ratio. Because it is elongated, it looks around 10–15% larger on the finger than a 1 carat round.
Does an oval look bigger than a round of the same carat?
Yes — it spreads its weight over a longer surface, presenting roughly 10–15% more face-up area, and its length also lengthens the finger.
What length-to-width ratio is best for an oval?
Most people prefer 1.35–1.55. Around 1.35–1.45 is the classic look; 1.45–1.55 is more elongated; 1.30–1.35 is rounder. It is listed on the certificate.
Why do two 1 carat ovals look different sizes?
Carat is weight, not dimensions. A shallow, well-spread oval shows more face-up area; a deep-cut one hides weight underneath. Compare the millimetres, not just the carat.
What is the bow-tie effect?
A faint darker band across the centre of elongated shapes. On a well-cut, symmetrical oval it is subtle — which is why viewing the actual stone helps.
Are these measurements exact?
They are close approximations for a well-cut oval. Up to 1 carat they reflect our own stones; larger sizes are extrapolated. Each stone's exact size is on its IGI certificate.
